ST JOSEPH'S ORPHANAGE
St Joseph's Orphanage in Jirapa was founded in 2004 by an orphan of Nandom, a town about 30 km from Jirapa, who wanted to give back to his community. The orphanage accepts about 30 newborn orphans from nearby hospitals and looks after them during childhood.
The story so far........
We started by bringing toys and clothes but soon realised that much more was needed..........
We replaced old cots and beds with new cots and beds and mattresses. We also fenced off a garden for vegetables so that the orphanage could become more self-sufficient for food. In addition we started to paint the bleak concrete walls that surround the orphanage. All of the materials that we use are locally sourced as we believe in boosting the local economy as much as we can.
We have therefore employed more staff, under the direction of a child therapist who is a member of Simon's Mango Tree, to nurture the children so that they will be more able to function after they leave the orphanage. They receive regular training via Skype.
We have refurbished the common area and converted a dark and uninspiring space into a room full of interactive equipment to encourage meaningful play.
